Lets begin with Alpha State.  What is alpha state?  How do we achieve this, and what are the benifits and negatives from it.

Lets define the way our brain processes information in terms of brainwaves first.  Brainwaves are measured in  hertz, or cycles per second.  Also known as Neural Oscillations, they are electrical impulses characteristic of a state of consciousness (when measured in the cortex).

There are five average brainwaves.  One being dominant an indicator of the state of mind.  On an EEG, all are present, but one will be significant.  They all co exist in different states causing a persons frame of mind, like anxiety or calmness.

There can be one or two dominant states.  When in balance, they have good traits. They fall into these average ranges:

Gamma  40 to 100 hertz - Cognitive, sensory awareness, learning, memory and REM sleep.

Beta  12 to 40 hertz  - Conscious, focus, memory and learning.

Alpha 8 to 12 hertz - bridge between conscious mind and subconscious, calmness, relaxation.

Theta 4 to 8 hertz - involved in fantasy, daydreaming and deep sleep. Creativity, emotions and relaxation and intuition

Delta  1 to 4 hertz - unconscious autonomic systems, immune system, healing and deep restorative sleep.
